Ginger which is considered as herb, is the underground rhizome of the ginger plant(Zingiber officinale) with a firm, striated texture. The flesh of the ginger rhizome can be of various colors like white, yellow or red , depending upon the variety of the plant. It is covered with a brownish skin that may either be thin or thick, depending upon whether the plant was harvested when it was mature or young.
Historically, ginger has a long tradition of being very effective in alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. The rhizome (underground stem) is used as a spice and also as a medicine. It can be used fresh, dried and powdered, or as a juice or oil.
